You Can Lead a Horse to Water but you can’t make ‘em THINK!
by Michael Patrick Murphy

CEO Survey of CEO’s say California is the worst place to do business for the last 7 years according to Chief Executive Magazine.

While this may be the truth, California is also a haven for corporations that use the tool of government, through their lobbyists, to eliminate smaller competition. The rules and regulations here prevent small businesses from breaching the large corporate veil. Few small businesses can afford to retain attorneys and their legal clout. So there is a silver lining for corporations in California that few large companies want to discuss. Lobbying in California is now a 260 billion plus industry, employing some of the highest paid folks in the state.

Until the people of California take action to reign in their lobby and union controlled corporate and social program owned government, little will change as the state lays off workers to try to stop the hemorrhaging of taxpayer money that is causing many businesses to leave the state as the housing industry here continues to collapse.

The State of the State and the world economies are in bad shape and promise to be worse. However, there are some steps the folks of Rocklin can take to help minimize the pain of these events.

The Solution

1. Support businesses in the City of Rocklin whenever possible. Suck the money in from the surrounding area and then lock it into Rocklin.
2. Wrest financial control over the City of Rocklin from the hands of developers by running, funding and electing folks that represent the people that live here.
3. Refocus the City on infrastructure, police, fire and other necessities. This is not a time for “fun and pretty.” We simply don’t and won’t have the money.
4. Eliminate all business taxes such as tiered business licenses to encourage local business growth and stop the stealing from them to pay for government waste and inefficiency.
5. Avoid support of national and international companies that are not based in Rocklin. This includes property managers, insurance companies, etc.
6. Encourage improvements in the County Court system that expedite small claims and create a timely court process that’s affordable for small businesses. Use local attorneys.
7. Donate to local charities where the proceeds stay in Rocklin. Make sure we are healthy in Rocklin first. Then we can help the rest of the world.
8. Reuse and recycle furniture, etc. Don’t send money out of state by making new purchases of foreign made goods.
9. Encourage businesses in Rocklin that supplant national chain organizations.
10. Try to buy locally grown produce, meats and poultry from local vendors.
